A L’ALTRA BANDA DEL MAR

A l'altra banda del mar (Across the sea), is SAMBACH's most intimate show.

It combines song and words to narrate true stories lived on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean during the first half of the 20th century. The work questions who writes the collective history and focuses on the individual realities behind the social and political contexts, dealing with themes such as exile, longing, love, longing and revolution.

The show features Araceli, a narrating voice performed by Carolina Alabau, who is also the singer and guiding voice for the audience.

Inspired by Araceli González Carballo, first partner of Joan Pujol (AKA Garbo), Araceli guides the audience through the historical contexts of the 18th and 20th centuries in Brazil and Germany, visiting Sao Paulo, Berlin, Paris, Lorca’s Seville, and the beaches sung by Dorival Caymmi, as well as the individual story of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The soundtrack

The music of the show includes sambas and Brazilian songs from 1900 to 1960, European tunes with a special focus on 1930s Germany, and of course, music by master Bach. The latter appears through free improvisations based on the seven secular cantatas, showcasing the more social and personal side of the Leipzig composer. These pieces articulate the scenic rhythm of the play, sometimes serving as the backdrop for Araceli’s monologues, and other times as true musical bridges between tunes from both sides of the ocean.

Our commitment

Every SAMBACH show reflects a commitment to current social challenges. “A L’altra Banda Del Mar” draws parallels between Bach’s reality, the early 20th century, and the present day, highlighting that history repeats cyclical patterns and conflicts. The play celebrates expression through art as a weapon of resilience and as a bridge between cultures and eras, demonstrating, once again, what Juan Ramón Jiménez said:

In times of war, beauty becomes an act of resistance.
